Case Study: Removing Leyland Cypress Trees in Bainbridge Island, WA

In February 2025, ClearTree undertook a comprehensive tree care project for a homeowner on Bainbridge Island, Washington. The primary objectives were the removal of two leaning Leyland Cypress trees and house clearance pruning to provide adequate clearance between the remaining trees and the house.

Project Overview

Leyland Cypress trees are often planted as privacy hedges due to their rapid growth and dense foliage. However, in the Pacific Northwest climate, they can reach heights of up to 60 feet and widths of approximately 25 feet, often outgrowing their intended space. In this case, the two leaning trees posed potential safety hazards, and their removal was necessary to thin out the group of cypress in the homeowner’s yard.

Operational Challenges and Solutions

The property featured a steep and narrow driveway, presenting logistical challenges for equipment access. To address these issues, ClearTree implemented the following measures:

  • Equipment Selection: A three-man crew utilized a Dino lift to navigate the steep driveway and a smaller chip truck for tighter sections, minimizing potential property impact.
  • Negative Rigging Techniques: Employed to safely lower large tree sections, preventing damage to the driveway and surrounding structures.
  • Client Assurance: Despite the contract specifying no liability for pre-existing driveway damage, ClearTree offered a discount to alleviate the homeowner’s concerns.

Execution and Best Practices

The project commenced promptly at 8:30 AM and concluded by 12:00 PM. Key steps included:

  • Branch Chipping: All removed branches and trees were chipped on-site.
  • Debris Management: The team meticulously raked small debris and utilized leaf blowers to clear the roof, ensuring the property was left in pristine condition.
  • Sustainable Practices: The resulting wood chips were donated to another Bainbridge Island homeowner, promoting community engagement and sustainability.

ClearTree’s commitment to professionalism and client-centric solutions was evident throughout the project, reinforcing their reputation as a trusted provider of comprehensive tree care services.
